    Excellent!

I know some people have difficulty accessing the
group's web site, since this would be text I could easily find space on my
server for a web page with the info. This would then be available from a simple
    url (web address).

Anyone who is interested send a description to me
and I will organise them into a webpage of all the episodes.

I think for the time being at least a very simple
outline of each story is all that is needed, they can always be expanded in the
    future.

This can be based on Diana's comprehensive episode
list. (If she does not mind). I'll start it off with a couple of my own
accounts and you can see what you think of it.

    Bill.

    Hi Bill,

    good idea to have descriptions
    of   a l l  episodes.

There is a website available with
descriptions of the episodes in SERIES
    2 :
    http://www.tvtome.com/servlet/episode
    guide/summary/showid-1616s/season-all.

    If more group members are
interested in having descriptions, it might
be a good idea to share the
task of providing them? I'd be willing to
    contribute a few descriptions, if
    necessary.

    Ron,

You might be able to play PAL on your
    VCR.

    Go here:

See if you player is listed, (also the
manufacturers websites of some DVD player have instructions on how to unlock
them for any region and PAL / NTSC playback).

My own players will deal with any region / system
    now after following the instructions.

If you need a PAL test DVD disc to confirm it
    works let me know.

    Thanks Diana,
A great series too bad it's not
    available in its
entirety.  It was broadcast in the 70s (?).  It
    may
    not
have been as popular in the US as in England, but I
    know I
enjoyed it.  Good acting and sailing ships,
    too.

Unfortunately I can't play PAL on my VCR.  Darn.  I
    wonder if UK
    DVDs are compatible.
      Thanks again for the
    info.

I'll support that, if every member of this list (73
of us) sends a mail to them, it ought to make them think there is a healthy
    market for further releases.

    Hi Ron,

As stated in previous messages, set one
    of the BFS DVDs contains
episodes one to four of series one and set two
    episodes five to
eight. Unfortunately, this is all that's available in the
    US as far
as I know.  In Europe series one, two and three are
    currently
available on DVD.  I believe series one and two were also
    released in
Australia by the BBC on video but I'm not positive about
    this.

The BFS DVDs are well worth getting as these are the complete

episodes as originally broadcast (all other versions of series one

that I'm aware of have been cut, a few scenes quite drastically).  If

anyone is interested in obtaining these DVDs/videos, they can be

purchased from amazon.com, cduniverse, etc. and also via eBay but do

check they are compatible with your equipment!

    While on the
subject, I'd like to appeal to all Onedin Line fans to
    email BFS and ask
them to release further episodes on DVD:

In episode 3 – "Other Points Of The
    Compass".

Elizabeth (Jessica Benton) was to accompany
Daniel Fogerty to dinner (Michael Billington, my other favourite actor and
character in the series, played the role of Fogarty to perfection.
Michael must be one of the most underrated talents in the acting world). She was
to be introduced to meet his boss Thomas Callon (Edward Chapman) as
    Daniel's intended wife.

The scene is one of the more memorable, her mood
changing and Daniel nearly persuades her, then she throw a tantrum and he ends
up going to the appointment on his own.

Classic series, classic story, and a class
    act!

    Bill.

Elizabeth was one of my favourite characters.  She had wonderful
strength of mind for a woman of the times and wasn't content with sitting at
home.  As I remember she had as good a business brain as James and the
competitiveness between them was thoroughly enjoying to watch.  Being of
the fairer sex myself I loved how Elizabeth would not be told what she must do
by anybody, particularly a man.  She was great.

Elizabeth is my favourite character and Jessica
favourite actress (or do we now say actor?) in the series. Having said that most
of those involved in the story were that bit special I think.

Least favourite character, William, but Marc
Harrison played the role very well.

I like Elizabeth though she's not my favourite
    character.

I do find her annoying sometimes in the first three series
    when she
can't seem to make up her mind between Daniel and Albert.  I
    prefer
Elizabeth later when the character has matured and the role
    expanded
and she's competing with James for business.

    The person I
dislike is Emma.  I've nothing against Jane Seymour but
    I find the
character very irritating and nearly always fast forward
    through her
scenes.  Does anyone else do the
    same?

    I think you are right.

This would be series 2 episode 3, "A Woman Alone". Anne had left James and
was staying with a woman who's husband was in jail as a result of a strike.

It was that woman feeding her child.

I believe there might also have been some inspiration for James Onedin from
the real life character Duncan Gibb,
    http://www.theheritagetrail.co.uk/notable%20houses/the_grove.htm

I think, but I can't be sure now, he was mentioned by Cyril Abraham in the
radio interview I previously referred to. My mother was a big fan of the
story, and I had taped the radio interview for her, the cassette was
knocking about for a long time but I don't know where it is now. A pity
because it would be really interesting to hear it again.

No, it just left all the "threads" running in the story.

I would guess that the outline of the saga was already planned well past
this point, maybe even exists somewhere…

One obvious twist for the script writers would have been Daniel Fogarty
miraculously turning up again (adrift in an open boat for weeks type of
thing) just as Elizabeth started with some new dalliance!

James had a new son, so there's a story to continue for another 20 years at
least! Charlotte was beginning to develop as a more sensible adult with her
own aspirations, in fact there is a rich potential harvest of stories, it
could have gone on and on. Like everything financial constraints held sway
    in the end.

Thanks to info from Diana we know that the 8th season of The Onedin

last couple of episodes? Did they tie-up all loose ends and finish
    this magificant saga satisfactorily?

Some of the series is available in Europe on DVD, someone will have to
refresh my memory as to what is exactly available, you may need a player
that can handle region 2 discs (assuming you are somewhere else).

Every episode is out there as amateur low quality mpeg1 files, good enough
    to follow the story.

I assume from your mail you are in the USA? An appeal on this list might be
fruitful? I know every episode reached those shores…….

I'll bet Diana will have a definitive answer on this.

But what I do remember was that it was becoming increasingly difficult to
keep the cast together, as of course many of the actors also had other
commitments. I think that was the main reason the series ended.

The series lasted for over 10 years which is a remarkable achievement, only
losing a few of the original members over that period, (most notably the
truly excellent Michael Billington as Daniel Fogarty which has to be one of
the best portrayals of a character in any TV series, except for Jessica
Benton's Elizabeth, but then I am unashameably biased!)

I also remember a radio interview with Cyril Abraham the creator of the
Onedin Line where he said he had an outline of the story right up to the
present day (then the 1970s) but if he ever put pen to paper on those or if
they exist anywhere nobody seems to know.

    Bill.

Sorry to hear of the hacker attack, I have suffered
them on one of my websites. Use a password with upper and lower case letters and
numbers, it takes a lot to get past that.

Anyhow I'm guessing the song " Home-Lovin' Man " is
possibly not accessible because of some policy about MP3 files, a
ll down to illegal music downloading, as a
result many servers will not host files with the MP3
    extension.

There are ways around this but the file would need
to be uploaded again either in Zip form or with the extension changed to
something else (eg .doc). When the file is downloaded the user simply renames
the file with the MP3 extension

    The site is down for
a short time because it was hacked. Someone thought it was funny to put
irrelevant info on it about the other Peter Gilmore (the

    I’m waiting now for

is upload the site again and with more info.

    I hope it won’t take
too long but for sure the site will come back.

Just as a bit of information.

Many DVD players can be unlocked or "hacked " to play discs from any region.
Some also let you turn off Macrovision so you can copy to VHS if you want
    to.

To see if your player is one go to:
http://www.videohelp.com/dvdhacks and see if it is listed.

Or do a search on Google, often the manufacturer's website has instructions.

My players will now operate with DVDs from any region.

    HTH Bill.

    Welcome!

Then you have definitely found the right place.

The first 2 series are available on DVD, try searching Amazon, Google etc.

Also, Marianne tells us that series 3 will be available soon from
    http://www.nl.bol.com .

But did you know there were 8 series of the Onedin Line made, consisting of
    91 episodes?

    >I am aware of the
    > problems with the UKs videotape (PAL) and ours (VHS). Does the same
    > problem exist on the DVDs?

Although I am no expert, all I can tell you is that I can play DVDs from
anywhere in the world including the USA which has a different TV system
(NTSC) and a different DVD region to the UK where I live. This is because
most DVD players can be easily "unlocked" or "hacked" to allow this (and the
output suits the local TV system in the region the DVD player was sold).
    Go to:
http://www.videohelp.com/dvdhacks and see if your player is listed, or to
its manufacturer's home page sometimes the instructions are there!

    > Anybody know if there's talk of reviving the series?
    >Maybe with new actors or bringing back the old one?

    I very much doubt it.

    ATB Bill.
