If you have the URL of that site (the www. address) it may be possible to
    find it here

"30 billion web pages archived from 1996 to a few months ago."
    http://www.archive.org/web/web.php

Not perfect, but I found a few old pages I thought had gone forever. (Just
shows an old website never dies, it does not tend to fade away either).

If you do have the url I would be interested in taking a look, there may be
    some useful info there.

    Erika,

Welcome, glad you found us all here.

I actually have every episode on VHS tape, this amounts to about 16
cassettes. Many of the episodes were at the time recorded using lp rather
than sp, to conserve tape as the cassettes were quite expensive at the time.
This means the quality is not very good on some of the tapes but they are
    "watchable".

I would like to be able to make copies of any or all of these available to
everyone on this list if they wanted them but this is not really feasible
because of the sheer number of episodes and of course it would be illegal
    under copyright laws.

This is a shame, because unless one of the digital services decides to
repeat the whole series it is unlikely they will be available again.

Best wishes for the forthcoming Christmas and New Year celebrations.

    Bill.

The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra 45 rpm single titled "Theme From 'The
Onedin Line' (Decca F 13259)" reached its highest position, number 15, in
the UK charts, on the 18th December 1971.

It remained in the charts for 14 weeks. A search in Google would probably
find this recording from one of the specialist record stockists.

    Brian,
In response to your message …..

I would imagine the Decca CD you have may well be the original
recording that was later used for the series. Anthony Isaacs adapted
the music specifically for the series but only part of the adagio was
used as "The Onedin Line theme". This is what was released
    as a
single and from memory it lasts three to four minutes.

By single I mean a 45 on vinyl. The single entered the pop charts.
I know it got into the Top Twenty and it might even have got into the
Top Ten. I can very vaguely recall the record being played on Top of
the Pops! I think a film of sailing ships and the sea was used – it
might even have been an extended version of that used at the
beginning and end of each episode .. but it's so long ago now
    that
I'm not at all sure about this.

Funnily enough, only on Saturday I found an article from the Daily
Mirror dated 3 December 1971 saying "The BBC are being inundated
    with
hundreds of requests for the name of the theme music to their tall
ships saga The Onedin Line .. it is proving such a hit that a
    special
single disc of the TV music is being issued today by Decca.

    Hope this answers your questions.

    Hi there, Brenton Welcome!

Have to agree with you about the series, I doubt we will see anything as
    well made again.

There is some interesting info in the file area of this group about the
    series:

    http://groups.yahoo.com/group/shiponedingroup/

Meanwhile a little question of my own. Can anyone who has DVD of the series
tell me the episodes list on the DVD version, and if they are edited
together or are in separate episodes. I have looked around sites like Amazon
etc and I can't quite figure out what you actually get.

It would seem there is a 2 DVD available, I can play DVDs from any region so
what I am looking for is (preferably the episodes version) at the best price
with the most material on them.

    TIA Bill.

I have done a few searches into the back ground of Cyril Abraham,
there does not seem to be a lot about him apart from some stuff about
    his scriptwriting activities.

I see to vaguely recall listening to a radio interview with the
author of the Onedin Line books on which the TV series was based.

This was many years ago, and of course my recollection is now a bit
sketchy. The theme of this was about how he thought up the plot and
overall story, how the name "Onedin" came about.

I seem to think that he was either at one time a bus driver in
Liverpool? And that the ideas came to him while driving around the
city about what dramas history had played out. The name "Onedin came
from some destination of the bus. (Or it was at least something to do
with the destinations displayed on the busses).

The story of the family had been drafted right up to modern times
(then the 1970s) but only a few of the early stories were published
in book form. I presume these drafts exist somewhere.

Of course I could be entirely wrong about this, but it would be
interesting to know for sure. I hope someone might know on here.

As an historical aside, there is a real story of a character similar
to James Onedin and from about the same era too. A little information
    here:

    Margriet,

Glad you found us here. The list has only been running for a few weeks
(thanks to Deryck for setting it up) and is doing very well so far.

If you have not already seen it check the files area of this group where
there are a few scanned articles and also some nice video stills in the
    photo area.

Did you ever get a reply from Peter Gilmore and Anne Stallybrass?

Anyone got these? If so they could be scanned and shared in the files area.

That is interesting, because I think I can remember something about the
original Drama Playhouse version, which I actually saw on TV. The memory is
    very vague now but……

In this James had the idea of sending back the empty wine casks at full
freightage charge as sole agent but carrying the wine free of charge from
Portugal. He got the idea after seeing the broken vinegar cask in Robert's
    shop.

The difference was that in the Drama Playhouse version the trick was to
disassemble the casks into their component parts, which meant they took up
very little space and he could carry a great number making much more profit
per voyage (coopers at the other end reassembled the casks).

In the first episode version, this idea is not mentioned.

Probably more than you wanted to know!

    Bill.

    Maija,

    A big welcome.

The cast list (of the whole series, not just a particular episode) as I have
    it at the moment is:

If anyone knows some more, post them on this list and I will add them to my

Here in the UK it would seem we may be limited to the "merged" version, the
local public library has these VHS versions, and in my area a DVD set is
supposed to be available for loan soon. Before I buy anything I will see
what episodes are included and if they are cut and run into each other or
    are in original episode order.

Naturally I would not try to copy these (!)

    😉

The cast list over the years the show was aired has many famous (now) names,
just from memory and without thinking too much about it, we have Jane
Semour, John Thaw, Michael Billington, Windsor Davies, there are others.
Quite a few careers were "launched" (nice tie to shipping). There were also
of course actors of long standing, such as the excellent James Hayter
    (Captain Webster).

Probably the biggest star of this outstanding series at the time was Jessica
    Benton (Elizabeth).

Most accounts of the series one reads now seem to barely mention her. I
believe this is mainly because she decided to withdraw from the acting
    profession and the public eye.

The last I heard of her was that she married a photographer called Charles
Waite and now lives in Dorset. She remained good friends with other cast
members particularly Howard Lang until his death (Baines) and Peter Gilmor
    (James).

Jessica was a "household name" over the years the series ran in the UK a big
star at the time, her fans who I am one, missed those outstanding
performances and wonder what might have been if she had continued her
    career.

    Michael Billington has a website:
    http://www.michaelbillington.org.uk/
and seems to be quite approachable, perhaps the list owner might like to
invite him to join our group?

I have every copy of the show on tape (I think 91). Some I recorded when
originally aired, some when repeated on the BBC Circa1984 and the rest from
UK Gold some years ago. (Unfortunately the image quality of a lot of these
while "watchable" is not very good and of course the tapes are getting quite
old now, so I am hoping for repeats on a digital service sometime.

I would like yourself welcome the whole series on DVD but I suspect there
might be some rights problems . Also just how good is the present offering
    on DVD?

If I can help with any information let me know,

    Bill.
