liamegan2000MemberI managed to sign up to The Box and I can see that series 5 and 6 are now available as torrents. I expect the rest of them will eventually find their way to torrents as well.
It would seem that where commercial interests have failed to give us releases of these still very popular programmes, enthusiasts have stepped in and provided fans of the saga with an alternative.
I expect there will be some debate about the legality of all this, the fact remains that if you want these stories it is about the only way you are going to get them.

liamegan2000MemberOk, this is it!I'd tucked it away in the files section ages ago!
The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra 45 rpm single titled "Theme From 'The
Onedin Line' (Decca F 13259)"
reached its highest position, number 15, in the UK charts, on the 18th
December 1971.It remained in the charts for 14 weeks.
Knew I seen it somewhere. 🙂
Not sure if this is actually stereo though, perhaps someone knows?

Subject: [shiponedingroup] Onedin Line ThemeThis is to go on a audio restoration project that I have been doing to amuse myself of the episode "Bloody Week". (This is one of the episodes missing on most commercial versions of series 2, ep 27).
It has undoubtedly one of the worst sound tracks of all the episodes, the special effects being noticeably lacking in believability, pretty well "coconut shells making clip-clop sounds for the horses, and gunshots and ricochets from dodgy cartoon sound track" type of thing.
I feel this all adds to a kind of "Allo Allo" feel to the story, which is a shame, because whatever the shortcomings of the plot, it does interweave The Onedin Line with contemporary historical events of that period. It really does spoil it for me so I decided to crank up Adobe Audition and go to work.
The final result will be a stereo sound track with as many of the defects removed as possible, this should lift the general viewing/listening enjoyment – at least for me, which is the point of the exercise 🙂
Anyway if you are still with me, apart from being somewhat time-consuming, the dialog is easy to clean up and place, the sound effects I can do perfectly – but the music.
Does anyone know the exact version of the music used in the series? Title, we know, number of the LP or single would be helpful. Also is there any incidental music, ie was there a disc release of the soundtrack? That would do, not seen anything on eBay that fits the bill.
TIA,
Bill.

Hi Bill — You're right about the Onedin Line story never losing
anything in the retelling — we keep watching it here in USA/PA and it
always retains our interest. I enjoy reading the postings. Had a
question for you, though. How did you get all 91 episodes? I only have
52. Also have a note for Bill Scanlan Murphy — I have always loved
the music from Spartacus. I do hope someday I'll be able to get the
rest of it including the 2 series that you worked on. Melva LeeFrom around October 1992 to 14th July 1994 the whole series was repeated on
a satellite TV channel here in the UK. I recorded all of them except for
some I already had from a previous BBC repeat in 1984 which was of the first
series. The technical quality of some of these off-air recordings leaves something
to be desired, fortunately most if the bad ones are now replaced by the
commercial releases of series 1, 2, 3 and 4.The last repeats in the UK were IIRC on UKTV Drama in 2005 of series 1 and
2, much criticised at the time on our list, because the broadcaster had made
some cuts to important scenes to fit in adverts and silly "what was on next
week" type messages. There's an episode list on my website:
http://tinyurl.com/2z7z8v or on the excellent Anne Stallybrass & Peter
Gilmore site
http://tinyurl.com/yskx22 which is run by 2 of our list members.Bill.
liamegan2000MemberIt is curious in a way, why such an outstanding series is so difficult to
obtain, or even why it is not repeated in its entirety on one of the cable
channels.I know there have been various problems with permissions (Marc Harrison, who
played William Frazer was one I believe, but this must have been sorted out
because series with him in them have now been released) .The DVD releases we have are mostly from the Netherlands, I wonder if this
is to do with commercial issues or copyrights?Or could it be just the sheer scale of the story that makes TV channels
reluctant to screen it? 91 episodes must be difficult to schedule, even if
you show one per day. What we can do is complain/ask/show an interest in the series, with various
organisations, BBC, UK TV channels, DVD companies like Memphis Bell and so
on, emailing take only a few minutes. Google will find most of the info
needed, perhaps we could post useful addresses/links on here.Bill.
liamegan2000MemberHello everybody, hope we are all well and getting in the mood for the
forthcoming Christmas/New Year celebrations. Our household is once again starting with series 1 episode 1 of the Onedin
Line story, really it never loses anything no matter how many time I see it.
It has taken something like 2 years of occasional viewing, mixed in with all
the other programmes we watch, to get to episode 91 "A Long Way Home" and
now we are back at the beginning again.Looked around on the web, still have not seen any mention of series 5 being
released yet. Anyone heard anything? Also I'll take this opportunity to welcome new members who have joined us in
the last few months, please say hello and introduce yourselves. In fact lets hear from anyone with any comments about the Onedin Line!
Bill.

of discs by now as I archive my VHS tapes to disc.I don't honestly remember a failure with one of the discs except where I'd

From your email you seem to have tried out several brands of DVD
blank discs. I have a Sony DVD recorder, a desktop PC fitted with a
Sony DVD writer and a Lite-On writer, and an old IBM notebook with an
IBM-branded DVD writer made by Panasonic. I've had my fingers burned
with a couple of brands of blank discs which haven't worked in some
or all of these. I now use Imation or Verbatim (including double-
layer if needed) and these work OK in everything I've got.I see you mention Tesco discs, and a friend uses these in his DVD
recorder and for his computer with no problems. Have you found any
problems with these?Regards,
Garth
liamegan2000MemberScout around all the local retail outlets and make a list of what's on offer, then when you get home check them against the on the DVD help site for region hacks. (Many of the cheaper DVD players I've seen on offer in supermarkets are listed). I pay around 20 to 30 UK Pounds for the ones around my home, all of them will play NTSC as well as PAL discs. All have been made region free.HTH Bill.

Have you tried this website: http://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers/philips-dvd-625/2551 ?
This is where I found out that my dvd player had a region free hack (which you can see because the URL leads to the dvd player I have). But if you search for your type of dvd player, maybe it has a solution.
Good luck!

I share your feelings about Leonora.. She's one of the most boring
characters in series 3.Leonora doesn't mind to be "used" by Elisabeth and Sarah.as long as she's
near James…But when you watch further.and this can be tough concerning Leonora, there
will be a surprisingly end of the "Leonora" story. It's a good thing The Onedin Line stopped for 2 years after series 3.

Subject: [shiponedingroup] Miss BiddulphHi,
I discovered The Onedin Line a mere couple of weeks ago when it was
on Dutch television. I was always mesmerized by the wonderful theme
song especially after it had been used in a Dutch commercial for an
insurance company.I was instantly hooked on the show and love each and every character
in it, although some a bit more than others. I have just started
watching the third season (they are on their way home after
searching for rubber seeds) and the one character that I wouldn't
mind toppling overboard is Leonora Biddulph.I do realize I should feel sorry for her with her naive adoration
for James as she seems the typical naive young girl, but what I
don't understand is that the two Onedin women don't really seem to
set her straight where James is concerned. Is it really a matter of "I'd rather have Leonora look after
Charlotte and James' household than do it myself?"Rina

liamegan2000MemberThis is indeed great news for us all on here.I was working on series 5 cleaning up the old vhs tapes I have and converting them to DVD. I have several bad tapes which were holding up the process, and created an awful lot of work in various software apps to get even a few seconds at a time of acceptable video. So now I'll move on to converting series 7, and 8 to complete my collection. (I've already done series 6) Then I'll have the luxury of replacing my home made discs with the releases as they are (hopefully) issued to complete the full story.
I for one kept on asking them, and I think the fact that we have contacted the companies to release the series has made them realise just how popular the Onedin Line is. I'm sure there must be a big potential for sales as people discover (and re-discover) this wonderful story.

liamegan2000MemberDianaI did not find any reference to Cyril Abraham interviews when I checked a
little while ago on the Beeb or the British Library online search or indeed
with a Google search. Not completely given up hope because I was given one of those new-fangled
cassette recorders as a present sometime around 1972, there is a couple of
carrier bags full of audio cassette tapes recorded over the years that I
have never had the time to go through. On a rainy day when I've nothing else
to do……. 🙂Mostly I know these are recordings of pop music off the radio – quite a
little time capsule in itself! Just might be something on Cyril Abraham on
one of them.Bill.

Subject: [shiponedingroup] Cyril Abraham Radio InterviewsHi Bill,
Yes, I can remember the days of taping the sound off the TV and glaring
at anyone in the family that made a sound while you were taping! That's really
liamegan2000MemberDiana ,Thanks for the information, very interesting. Nice to have an account of
this which has a documented source. My mother was a very keen fan of the series and I had to tape everything to
do with it that was broadcast if she was going to miss it because of work. This was before the days of video recorders, when an episode was on she knew
she'd miss, I had to record the sound track from the TV – sort of a "radio"
version, so she would not miss the episode entirely. I still have a reel of
tape that has "winner take all" from the original broadcast, you can hear
noises in the background that were not part of the programme, like our dog
barking! All recorded through the crystal microphone on my Sobel tape
recorder. The story worked surprisingly well audio only. There were also some radio interviews with Cyril Abraham, these must have
been lost or the tape re-used for something else, I still hope something
will turn up. Trawling through the BBCs websites has not found any reference
to them. The name thing is something at odds with what I remember form one of these
items, but I'm probably wrong or confusing what he said with some other
aspect of the story. It is something like 3 decades since I listened to
them.Looking forward to the pages on Gilmore-Stallybrass site.

Subject: [shiponedingroup] Name OnedinHi Elaine,
You asked a while back about the surname Onedin. I can tell you that
Cyril Abraham made it up. In Cyril's own words, this is how he
eventually came up with the name. When he first thought of the idea that lead to The Onedin Line, Cyril
quickly came up with a name for the head of the family ".. I called
the old man James – I couldn't think of a surname ." He still hadn't
found a name when the BBC agreed to film the story. "All I needed
was a name for the family. One day I stumbled across the word
Ondine, a mythological sea monster. By transposing the "e", I had
James Onedin, a sea devil."The interview with the author of The Onedin Line was published
in "Woman" magazine dated 28 July 1973. It's a fascinating piece.
Cyril describes his first meeting with the cast (this was for the
pilot in 1970, not the series), how he came up with the idea for
Onedin as well as a couple of stories about filming the series, such
as his realisation when out in the middle of the Channel at the start
of filming that he was the only professional seaman aboard the
Charlotte Rhodes.Marianne and I intend to put the whole interview with Cyril on the
Gilmore-Stallybrass site soon – I'm sure all fans of the series will
enjoy reading the piece and find it interesting (http://www.gilmore-
