Subject: [shiponedingroup] Bloody WeekI just thought I'd remind everyone that the episode 'Bloody Week', is being shown on the September 2nd, 2010 at 4:00pm and 7:00pm on the freeview Yesterday channel.
This episode was not included on the DVDs I have so I'm guessing quite a few people will not have seen it.
The story briefly. James ignores the 'political unrest' in Paris and goes to collect an old debt. There's more of a touch of Allo Allo about some of the dialog, and it was obviously filmed on a low budget, the story is connected to historical events though and is reasoanble.
So don't forget to set the PVR or to watch it.
Bill.

liamegan2000MemberThere is no known recording of the pilot episode from 1970 with Anne Onedin
played by Sheila Allen, it has been suggested it was a victim of BBC policy
that also lost other productions.VT was expensive in those days, the tapes were wiped and reused when it was
considered there was no further interest in a programme rocorded on them.Bill.

liamegan2000MemberGood to know, and on a channel most people will have on free to air service as well.Periodically the re-airing of the Onedin Line re engages the interests of those who saw it years ago and draws new fans.
Hopefully it will encourage the release of the remaining series from 6 on DVD too.

liamegan2000MemberI wonder if anyone can help me with information on the new release of series 6?Are these discs similar to the previous ones in that
1. The soundtrack has the original English audio as well as any other language that might be on them?
2. If there are subtitles, that these can be turned off?
3. Give a link to a site where I can order these preferably one that someone here has used and can recommend?
So far I've only found sites in the German and Dutch language, and while the web translator does a fair job I can't really be sure of the points above.
Thank you for any help,
Bill.

10th November 2009 at 5:49 pm in reply to: Which discs for episodes 8, 9 & 10 of season 4 DVD? #1144liamegan2000MemberNorth America is region 1, the UK is region 2 (along with some other countries). It is not just a region issue. Most players can be unlocked to play any region, that is not the main problem.
In the UK (and most of Europe) our TV system is PAL, in the USA it is NTSC, this is nothing to do with the region a DVD is set to.
Every DVD player here I've come across can play the American system which is NTSC, indeed quite a few music concerts are NTSC region 2, one at random Marc Almond's 1992 Royal Albert Hall Concert is an example.
But from what I'm told the situation in the USA is different, as few DVD players can actually play PAL discs in a way North American TV sets can understand.
Your DVD player has to be able to understand PAL DVDs, also region 2 and 0, in order to play them on a standard North American TV (which is set up in NTSC system).
Most North American DVD players only understand NTSC system and region 1.
According to someone I know in Seattle there are three players on the US market that play Region 2 DVD's to North American TV sets.
They are:
Daewoo DVD-5800, (Daewoo DVD-5800 Code Free DVD player with built-in Video Converter is supposedly high quality at a reasonable price)
Philips DVD-642/37,
Akai DVM-9500.I suggest you check these out with a local retailer, or do some research on the web on one of the AV forums.
The ability to play any region disc opens up a lot of opportunity and choice.
Hope this helps,
Bill.

liamegan2000MemberThe idea of a modern continuation of the story was in the mind of the creator of the Onedin Line. There was a radio interview with Cyril Abraham in the 70s when the Onedin series was at the peak of its popularity. I know this because I'd been asked to tape the interview on audio cassette for my mother, who was a big fan of Onedin, I believe it was from "Women's Hour" or some such programme.
In the interview, Cyril Abraham talked about what had inspired the story, how the unusual surname came about, and that he'd outlined the story right up to modern times (the 1970s).
It was not clear to me if he meant by outlined, a written outline, or if he'd simply meant he'd created the scenario in his mind, I'd have thought if anything had been written down it would have surfaced sometime since.

You can see the scene, young handsome Onedin, stuck in boring office overlooking container port, tallship race gathering in the harbour entrance, sets him off daydreaming about Gt.Grandfather James, of crisp white sails, of masts heeled to a stiff breeze, dolphins joyfully playing at the bows, of real seamanship and romance………… Cue music…………….Capt.Mangled.

3rd February 2009 at 5:15 pm in reply to: any place to find a complete boxed set of The Onedin Line #1105liamegan2000MemberThe problem as I understand it is not just the region, as you correctly say many players can be "hacked" to play any region, this might seem an alarming term but normally is in fact only entering some code in from the keypad on the remote, usually with the tray open. Sites such as:
http://www.videohelp.com/dvdhacks have lots of info. But apparently this is not always enough for North American equipment. And it is due to the differing TV standard.
USA = NTSC
Europe = PAL (mostly). This refers to the system used for TV, the two are not compatible, although it seems a lot of DVD players will play PAL DVD discs in a way compatible for NTSC TVs. (Anyone who can confirm?). We are luckier the other way around in the UK. I've never come across a DVD player that can't play NTSC discs to our PAL TVs.
A somewhat laborious work-around is to "rip" a PAL DVD on a PC using "DVD Decrypter", then from the resulting files use "TMPGEnc DVD Author 3" to re-author a DVD but set to NTSC output, in other words it converts from PAL to NTSC, these files are then burnt to a new disc.
Naturally this must break various copyrights and so forth, but I believe in the USA you are allowed to make a backup copy of your discs, so you should be ok (?).

There is trouble, I think, is with the rights payment for the series in the English speaking world. – That's my guess anyway.

22nd January 2009 at 9:40 pm in reply to: any place to find a complete boxed set of The Onedin Line #1098liamegan2000MemberHello, welcome to our little group. There are 8 series consisting of 91 episodes, of these series 1, 2, 3, 4,
and 5 are available on DVD. 6 to 8 are not commercially available as yet,
and there seems no immediate prospect of these. The above mentioned are available from The Netherlands, You can sometimes
buy the DVD's at http://www.nl.bol.com or http://www.freerecordshop.nl
eBay is another place to look. There may be some others so if anyone knows
please tell us.These are original English soundtrack BUT are region 2 discs, which I
believe can cause problems for North American DVD players and TVs. The
simplest solution is I'm told to buy a DVD player which is capable of PAL
playback to a NTSC TV, these are available (I'm also told) but how much and
where from I don't know – I invite anyone from over the pond to jump in with
some info here!Series 6 to 8 are floating around the internet if it is legal for you to
obtain them as "torrents" in your country. These are compressed AVI "Xvid"
files, these will play on any PC and some stand-alone DVD players.Bill.

Subject: [shiponedingroup] a question about series 8Hi William Murphy,
On The Gilmore/Stallybrass site Diana's Onedin Line background text
says:"In terms of the cast, Jill Gascoine had intended to continue as
Letty Onedin as well as appearing in her new series, The Gentle
Touch. However, this proved impossible when filming on the latter was
rescheduled resulting in a clash with that of The Onedin Line."It has always puzzled my mind how The Story of The Onedin Line would
have ended if Jill Gascoine has been able to be in the cast of the
series 8. If I've understood correctly all the scripts were already
written with Letty being alive before this timetable problem with
Jill.So I thought as you've been in the team, if you can remember anything
any more of the plot with Letty in series 8?Letty has always been the number 3 on my Onedin list after James and
Anne. And I'm sorry to say I think the series 8 is the worst one of
the lot. The show should have ended after 7 series to the scene where
Letty says in a fit of anger to James:
"James Onedin you are being so stubborn and big headed."
James answering.
"I know, always have been and always will be!"Wishing also to all members of The Shiponedingroup
MERRY CRISTMAN AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR!

I'm from Hungary, so I can understand what's written on that page 🙂
It is about the original series, and lists the actors and actresses
who dubbed it. In Hungary, it is the custom to dub movies and series
instead of subtitling them.It may be interesting, that the page mentions the "new" version of
dubbing ("Új szinkron verzó"). There is/was an old version made in the
80s, when the first few seasons of the series were originally
broadcast on Hungarian TV. Its fate is unknown: some say that the
recordings were destroyed by fire, some say that they still exist. The
new version was made in the 90s when the series was broadcast again,
but in its entirety this time. Onedin Line is being issued in Hungary
on DVD (2 seasons so far) with this new version.Istvan

2:34 PMliamegan2000MemberAll true.If the industry and the representatives of those involved could just get their act together a lot more classic stuff would be available to folk. I suppose greed and self interest are the factors that rule in all of this. Having said that I do believe those who worked making a programmes like Onedin (and others of course) should get just reward for their part in it.
With The Onedin Line, I have and always will buy DVDs of each series as they become available, I think most of us will if we can. It is worth noting the all the ones I have originate from the Netherlands, makes me suspect this is some work-around for legal problems.
And while not excusing "illegal copying" you can't blame people for using the torrent sites, when this is the only way they can get series 6, 7, and 8 (and possibly 5 if the problems aren't resolved on that).
Bootlegging to me is commercial size operations making big bucks as was rife not long ago in places like Hong Kong, not people swapping their own off-air recordings but I suppose not all will agree with me there.

Subject: [shiponedingroup] "Legal wrangle"I have a horrible feeling I may know what the "legal wrangle" surrounding re-issues of the show might be; unless I'm very mistaken, it's going to be over the music rights. It would only take one incomplete or incorrectly filled out cue sheet to stop the whole series going out. To see just how bad this can get, check out the furore over the DVD re-issues of The Fugitive, which will probably now stop after having been the best-selling TV reissue ever. Just google "fugitive dvd music" and stand by to be horrified. The bootleggers are cleaning up. By the way, the music of The Fugitive was recorded entirely in London in great secrecy by the LSO, to get round an industrial dispute between the studio and American musicians. What the studio did to get the second series of The Fugitive out on DVD is too disgusting to describe; suffice it to say that I will never allow one of the second series DVDs in my house unless it is to be used under coffee cups or as
Christmas tree decorations. If Pete Rugolo needs a hitman, he should give me a call.Another show, Dark Skies, was all set for DVD when the music bill came in; it was more than the manufacturing costs and the projected five-year sales combined and doubled. As a result, you will never, ever see Dark Skies on an official DVD. Again, bonanza for the bootleggers.
I really, really hope I'm wrong on this, but given the history, I'm not hopeful.

liamegan2000MemberI just received my copy of this.It is on 4 discs. The transfer looks like it has been taken from the export episodes the beeb sent out to overseas market, which I think might have been on 16mm film, but they are perfectly reasonable having said that. (Although not as good as the original masters the BBC still has in its archives judging by odd excerpts we see from time to time in documentary programmes).
As with the other releases from this source (MEMPHIS BELL) it does not look as though there has been any cleaning up of the material during digitisation. They are in the original episode format not all cobbled together like earlier versions of series 1 and 2 were.
Dutch subtitles come by default on my player but they can be turned off. The soundtrack is in English just in case anyone is in doubt.
I'm pleased to see these episodes again without all the poor picture and tracking problems on my old VHS tapes,
Didn't I read something about a legal wrangle over series 5 and this is why (at least as far as I know) it has only been available from the eBay seller? All the "normal" commercial shops had to withdraw it? Maybe someone knows.
Lets hope this does not get in the way of series 6 being issued! —- I hope.
