: What I can't understand is why there has been a reluctance in the UK to
: release anything beyond series 2 – given the popularity of the Onedin
    line.
    :
Some of the reasons have been touched on some time ago on this forum.
Basically it was suggested this could be a permissions problem. From what I
could gather the BBC had tried to contact some actors because the original
contracts did not make provision for VHS and DVD (VHS did not come into
being generally until the late '70s and DVD obviously was not invented at
the time) and past due repeat fees/overseas sales.

I can't remember if one of those actors concerned was named on this list
previously, so I wont state it here just in case it is confidential but
there was someone on the list hoping to locate him – I don't know if they
were successful or not – my own efforts using some contacts I had, failed to
turn up anything except the person was last heard of in Holland some
    indeterminate time ago.

Hopefully if this is the impediment to releasing series 5 onwards then it
has been resolved as the actor appears in those episodes.

    Thanks!

I'd got all those listed from my searches on various book sites except the White Ships. So I'll now look for the best prices on Amazon, eBay etc.

Does anyone have a full list of books of the Onedin Line stories that
    were published in English?

I'm intending to collect all of them if possible, already been doing
    internet searches.

    Welcome to our group.

I think Elizabeth is simply the English version of
Isabelle which is the same for a number of European languages including Spanish
if I remember correctly. The different spelling and pronunciation may well have
started about the time of our own good Queen Bess (Elizabeth the
First) in England, although I'm sure a search in Google would tell all the
    facts.

I'm sure someone on here will know about the books,
and again Google my be your friend for some information.

Up to and including series 4 is available
commercially, I know of no plans for series 5 onwards to be released
    yet.

    Hi to all,
I just became a member a few weeks ago. Have been
    a fan of the Onedin
TV series since it showed on german TV, think in the
    70's. Was thrilled
when I purchased my first tapes and DVDs and could
    listen to all of the
original voices and dialogs a few days ago. Funny but
    James's sister
Elizabeth is named Isabelle in the german TV episodes and
    books!??
Can anybody tell me if there are any further books after the "Iron

Ships"? Also can anyone recommend the following books: Cyril Abraham's

The Onedin Line : Turning Tide by Bruce Stewart, World of the " Onedin

Line" by Alison McLeay or "Your complete guide to the continuing story

of BBC1's " the Onedin Line"  and to the real life saga of the sea in

James Onedin's 1870s ( Radio Times' special.  What are they about? I

ordered most of the Series 1-4, ( on tapes or DVDs ) can you also

    obtain further episodes?
So lots of questions. To me, I was born in
    Plymouth, MA, USA live in
Germany since 1968 and am married with 2
    children. Also a member of
    bookcrossing.com.Thanks you for any
    answers.

    I live near Manchester UK.

Arrived today from Free Record Shop.com, I ordered
    them on the 13th May.

28.49 USD total which I'd guess is around £15 to
£20 so I'm happy with that.

Good quality, be nice to watch these again. Very
    pleased with them.

Sorry – meant to say that series 3 is available I
can't remember the URL now to the online shop, but a search on eBay should find
what you want. I expect someone on here will remind us of the link.

There is little point in buying VHS tapes unless
you don't have a DVD player.

Series 3 is available on DVDs which are far more
robust and do not wear out through repeated use.

    BUT…. USA
is region 1, UK and Europe (Australia as well I think) and some other parts of
the world are region 2. As sold a player will probably only play the
region you are in (USA in your case). As far as the region compatibility
is concerned many players can be made to play back discs from any region. This
is called region hacking and is not as fearsome as it sounds. Check the list
of players and the instructions here to make your player region free enter the
model an hit the search button:
    http://www.videohelp.com/dvdhacks If
you have a player listed there you are ok. If not I'd suggest buying a cheap
player, I don't know about the USA but in the UK DVD players are for sale at
less than £20 which I'd guess is about $30 and can be made region
    free.

The USA uses a TV system called NTSC, in the UK
Europe and much of the rest of the world the PAL system is used. The good news
is that as far as I am aware all DVD players will correctly play either system
so there should be no problem with that.

I told you all that the DVD will
    be released 21 April.

There’s already a seller on eBay
who pre-sells the DVDs for Euro 40.

It’s up to you to buy it from this
seller but next Monday I have contact again with Memphis Belle and the price
will be approx. Euro 20 excl. P&P.

    I’ll update you next
    Monday.

Welcome to the group you've found the right place
for enthusiasts of this great series.

There are a total of 91 episodes in 8
    series.

    Series 1,  2 and 3 are available
commercially but there seems little prospect of the rest of them been
released on DVD or being shown again (in the near term at least) as I believe
there is some problem with repeat fees / permissions for one or more of the
    actors in the later episodes.

    Dear fellow Onedin fans!

As a new group member I
just wanted to say hello to you all. I’m a huge
    fan of “The Onedin Line”
and I’m looking very forward to all the
    discussions here in the
    future.

I own the three DVD boxes and having some more stuff on
    video.
Unfortunately my collection of the series is still incomplete and
    I
really hope that there will be more available on DVD soon.

    A very
nice day to all of you!

    Cheers,

    Peter

    Cari,

I think you a very probably correct. It is not
a technical problem we can assume, since we know that all the episodes
exists on tape as uk gold re-broadcast the whole series a few years
    ago.

The very best we can hope for in the mean time
is that they are repeated, so it is worth badgering UK Drama with a letter or
    email maybe we'll get lucky.

I'm no Sherlock Holmes but I'll contact you off

I believe this could be a permissions problem.  A
    while ago, a friend of
mine was working (acting) at the BBC and someone
asked her if she had a
contact address/phone/email for an actor.  The
    BBC was trying desperately to
find this person as they needed their
    signatures for permission for DVD
stuff and past due repeat fees/overseas
sales (no actual details were given
as to exactly which program but given
the name of the people they were
looking for, it seemed likely to her and I
that it was for Onedin Line -
    series 4 onwards).

    Unfortunately she
had no idea as to their whereabouts, as both of us had
    been looking for the
same person for over 2 years with no luck.

    The original contracts did
not include VHS or DVD permissions... since they
    didn't exist back
then!  If Memphis Belle has run into the same problems,
    then it's not
for lack of sales, but for lack of signatures.

    If we have any members
on the list who want to do some person searching,
    then please email me off
list and I can give further
    details.

Hello Stan, welcome to the group.

There were 91 episodes spread over 8 series
broadcast originally from 1971 to 1980. If you have satellite or cable TV and
live in the UK the first two series are being shown on UK Drama
channel starting on Monday. These are also available commercially on DVD (or VHS
tape) check Amazon or eBay etc.

As for series 4 onwards these are not
available on tape or DVD commercially yet and I don't know if they ever
will be, which is a shame as there are so many good story lines as the saga
unfolds in the later episodes. The whole series was repeated on UK Gold about
1993-94 so there is a chance they will appear again one day. Members of this
list keep mailing the cable channel UK Drama asking for more of the series to be
shown (at least I hope they do) so who knows maybe we'll get another series or
    two out of them.

I made a small website with some info and links to
    other Onedin themed sites at:
    http://www.sound-research.co.uk/onedin_line.htm You
    might find it interesting.
