OK then everyone, how about this:

Young handsome Jason Onedin (John Simm, for visualisation purposes), stuck in boring office overlooking container port, tallship race gathering in the harbour entrance, sets him off daydreaming about Gt.Grandfather James, of crisp white sails, of masts heeled to a stiff breeze, dolphins joyfully playing at the bows, of real seamanship and romance…

Jessica Frazer (Joanne Farrell, I thought, if anyone knows who I mean), current head of the Frazer Line, is descended from Robert Frazer, who took his father William's surname on learning his true parentage and was bequeathed the company by his grandmother Lady Fogarty. Jessica is attracted to Jason but also his business rival. She is far more ruthless than he suspects. She is tempted to take advantage of his tendency to daydream about sailing ships and keep only half an eye on business…

Business aside, they are both fascinated by their family history and have been researching. Intriguing mysteries have come to light.

In 1887, Caroline Onedin was found dead at the foot of the staircase in her home. Foul play was suspected, especially as her husband Samuel had been seen on a number of occasions wining and dining his ex-wife Charlotte. Had either Samuel or Charlotte, or both, removed the increasingly surplus Caroline? If not, then who?

Jessica searches through a box of correspondence in the attic of the Frazer house. It belonged to Elizabeth Fogarty. Two items arrest her attention.

A remark in a letter from Charlotte to Elizabeth refers to the possibility of Mr Dunwoody having murdered his first wife in order to marry his pretty second one.

Another letter is from William Frazer to his mother, written from a villa abroad – and it's dated three years after William's supposedly fatal accident in Liverpool.

Could any of these mysteries be connected?

    And so on.

The bang up to date idea could be linked to the original series by having a new member of the family tracing their ancestry … bit by bit we could learn what happened to the old Onedins in the years since 1886…dark secrets that affect the present etc.

The role Marc Harrison played in Poldark was that of Ned Tamblyn, and I think it would have been before his run as William Frazer.

    Hi Jason,

There is a 7 inch vinyl copy available on ebay for 4 pounds fifty. Unless
you know what CD or cassette tape the song is on, I'm afraid you're doomed to
hunting through a list of 147 Harry Secomb offerings on ebay.
    Try this website: _www.thespacebar.co.uk_ (http://www.thespacebar.co.uk) .
Maybe they can help. Can't imagine the theme with words though. Isn't it too
corny??? Good luck and let us know if you are successful. From: Sharon James

You are aware that there are about 13 series of the show, in total about 95
episodes. You can get some on DVD but it's very hard to find anything on DVD

time, I see my BBC radio shows on Usenet – and I'm always delighted
to see them there, because that is where the real fans are – just
like here. Similarly, I see the occasional glimpse of myself on
YouTube. If the BBC can't get it together to put this stuff out,
those people who watched us week in, week out the first time out (or
who want to discover the show anew) should be allowed to use whatever
means they can to get hold of the shows – because who will be first
to the stores when the official issue comes out (if it does)?
Precisely. Those unofficial issues create new fans and keep us alive
in the hearts of old ones. Obviously, when sales get into 5 or 6
figures, then we need to talk – but the people we need to talk to are
    at the BBC.

    Dear Bill,

I am just watching series 4(?) where Charlotte as a child has
diptheria. She has passed the crisis (sighs of relief abound). Was
Laura Hartong popular enough at the time to generate autograph cards?
There is a Laura Hartong on Facebook with a photo, but I don't see
much resemblance – how old would she be now?? Was she American?
Cheers and happy holidays to all Onedinites. Anybody know whatever
    happened to Mary Webster??

Glad it didn't end, I'd not have been in it!! Naturally I think it was the best series!

Subject: [shiponedingroup] a question about series 8

    Hi William Murphy,

On The Gilmore/Stallybrass site Diana's Onedin Line background text
    says:

"In terms of the cast, Jill Gascoine had intended to continue as
Letty Onedin as well as appearing in her new series, The Gentle
Touch. However, this proved impossible when filming on the latter was
rescheduled resulting in a clash with that of The Onedin Line."

It has always puzzled my mind how The Story of The Onedin Line would
have ended if Jill Gascoine has been able to be in the cast of the
series 8. If I've understood correctly all the scripts were already
written with Letty being alive before this timetable problem with
    Jill.

So I thought as you've been in the team, if you can remember anything
any more of the plot with Letty in series 8?

Letty has always been the number 3 on my Onedin list after James and
Anne. And I'm sorry to say I think the series 8 is the worst one of
the lot. The show should have ended after 7 series to the scene where
Letty says in a fit of anger to James:
"James Onedin you are being so stubborn and big headed."
    James answering.
"I know, always have been and always will be!"

Wishing also to all members of The Shiponedingroup

MERRY CRISTMAN AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR!

    Maija from FINLAND

I also have just received my copy of series 5 through the ebay dealer and am extremely pleased to have been able to get it legally.  I also appreciate all of the news and suggestions from shiponedingroup.  I would never have known about the ebay int. source without the group.  Thank you, all.   I, also, am waiting for issues of series 6, 7 etc.

I just received my copy of this.

It is on 4 discs. The transfer looks like it has been taken from the export episodes the beeb sent out to overseas market, which I think might have been on 16mm film, but they are perfectly reasonable having said that. (Although not as good as the original masters the BBC still has in its archives judging by odd excerpts we see from time to time in documentary programmes).

As with the other releases from this source (MEMPHIS BELL) it does not look as though there has been any cleaning up of the material during digitisation. They are in the original episode format not all cobbled together like earlier versions of series 1 and 2 were.

Dutch subtitles come by default on my player but they can be turned off. The soundtrack is in English just in case anyone is in doubt.

I'm pleased to see these episodes again without all the poor picture and tracking problems on my old VHS tapes,

Didn't I read something about a legal wrangle over series 5 and this is why (at least as far as I know) it has only been available from the eBay seller? All the "normal" commercial shops had to withdraw it? Maybe someone knows.

Lets hope this does not get in the way of series 6 being issued! —- I hope.

    Bill.
