TOL was first aired as a one-off drama production.

When they came to make it into a series the lady who played Anne decided she didn't want to do it and Anne Stallybrass was cast instead.
Her bits of the pilot episode were then re-shot

    > _________________________________________________________________

I belong to another 'cult' message board and what the folks in the US
(or other non-Region 2 areas) do is buy Region 2 disks and then 'hack'
their DVD player to be region-free.

There are websites which give the 'hack' codes for each model of DVD
    player.

I give that advice in good faith – please don't blame me if it goes
    pear-shaped!!

in reply to: Episode 1 of Onedin on BBC4 on Sunday #1021
Don't know if this is any help to anyone but BBC4 is also on Sky
channel 116 and Virgin TV 107.

As I said the documentary is on BBC iplayer (after the programme
first airs) http://www.bbc.co.uk but you may have to be in the UK to watch
    that.

According to the website the poramme lists as

The Onedin Line: The Wind Blows Free
Part of the Great British Sunday. First episode in the series
broadcast in 1971. Liverpool, 1860: James Onedin (Peter Gilmore)
wants to buy the schooner Charlotte Rhodes, from Captain Joshua
Webster (James Hayter) but he is reluctant to sell, so James decides
to try and court his daughter. [S]

    And the documentary as….

The Cult of The Onedin Line
Part of the Great British Sunday season. A look at The Onedin Line
which ran for a period of nine years about a nineteenth century
Liverpool shipping family. How the sale of the series to Germany
saved it from going massively over-budget, why Philip Bond left the
series and how the storm-at-sea sequences were filmed.

Including contributions from Jane Seymour, Jessica Benton, Philip
Bond, Christopher Douglas, Jill Gasgoine, producer Peter Graham
Scott, writer Martin Worth and director Pennant Roberts. [S]

    Hi

I may be drummed out of the group for saying this (!) but I don't
think the sketch quite matched up to the dizzy heights of 'fork

With apologies to our members who have absolutly no idea who the 'Two

    — Well I am not sure if this is quite what you mean, but I once saw
a 'Two Ronnies' sketch where of course Ronnie Barker was Baines and
Ronnie Corbett (plus amazing sideburns! ) was a rather diminutive
James. Can't quite remember the storyline but every time 'Baines' left
or entered the cabin the contents of a bucket of water was thrown over
    him!

    Hi Helga

I will just have to stick with what I have got at the moment then!.
Pity about the series 1 and 2 DVD's. The next computer we get is to
have a TV adaptor so I hoping to copy my VHS tapes to DVD so I don't
    have to worry about them

    Thanks for all the advice

    Thanks Helga for that clarification!!

My original tapes of series 1 are a little worn now and I don't like
to use them. I didn't just want to buy compilation ones like from
    Playback .

    Christmas here we come!

ones that you sent me yet.

    Hello Bill

Thanks for the reply. I ma afraid that even though our PC is very
new we do not have a video/TV card in it so the option is gone.
Though I expect someone can do it professionally along the lines
of 'transfer your old wedding cine film to VHS' that was around a
    few years back!

I have the DVDs of series 1 from PLAYBACK as an insurance policy as
although the vidoes were not played for several years the children
discovered the series 2 years ago and it has become standard
Christmas viewing (nothing else decent on the box etc!!). Not that I
have had time to watch them as I can't just do it in little bursts
    and tend to get engrossed….

I am hoping that series 2 comes out on DVD soon so I can sort out
the videos for that as they are getting a little stretched too. I
have been wondering about these DVDs from Memphis Belle but I am not
    too sure about them.

I am not sure why the entire series is not out on video/DVD as other
good series such as 'Upsatirs Downstairs' are – why has it been
    forgotten?

I have passed my address to Helga so I am hoping for an exciting
letter some time, as are the kids eho want to know 'what happens
    next?'

    Hi

I have just joined this website and thought I'd say hello. As many of
the other posters have remarked it's nice to find you are not alone!!

I have been a fan of the series since 1971 and admit that it's
probably my all time favourite series. I don't remember the pilot
episode as I wouldn't have been allowed to stay up that late, but
certainly from when it became a proper series. I have the first
series in it's entirety on VHS (the BBC rescreened it when afternoon
TV started in 1986) and then the the rehashed second series on VHS
    which I bought last year.

My children 12 and 6 saw it for the first time last year and were
instantly hooked – we had to watch the lot over a very short time as
they wanted to know what happens next!! I am afraid the hankies still
had to come out for Anne's death 30 years on!!

As one who doesn't have satellite/cable/digital I think the BBC
should have a classic drama slot where some of the great series of
the past can be reshown. We still have endless reruns of US crime and
SCIFI so why can't we celebrate our own home grown drama?

Anyway, I have a memory for odd facts so I may be able to help with a
few odd facts from time to time.

    Fiona
