Hello Bill,
Better recordings thank you but also more episodes that I'd forgotten I was in!
I've been in touch with another deck hand who was involved in earlier filming onboard the Soren and who also missed seeing the original series because we were both at sea on Sorlandet and other tallships, he too has been recording all.
Repeat fees? It was £10 a week ships money and £20 a day BBC money and food and that was it!
Aye it were tough before the mast in my day, an' you tell young people today an' they don't believe you……..

Perhaps it was the camera angles. I noticed in these series that rather than many of the wide shots the cameras had fairly narrow field of views possibly to conceal locations.I also find it interesting to note in these series that unlike Series 1 to 4 the credits do not acknowledge the locations.
Was this due to a change in BBC policy?

Just been watching the Memphis Belle editions of Series 5 & 6.
Gloucester Docks are easily recogniseable and having done trips on the Bristol channel on PS WAVERLEY and MV BALMORAL I am fairly familiar with the coastline.
Howevert, I have had difficulty identifying locations used for the coastal filming. Never appeared to be much of a problem when filming was done down in Devon.
Anyone have knowledge as to where coastal and shore scenes were filmed?

The third series is covered in the book 'The Trade Winds'.
The fourth and fifth series are covered in 'The White Ships'.
Series six to eight were not novelised.
It's worth mentioning that in the books events do not unfold in quite the same way as they do on screen and some are omitted. There are also some characters who do not appear in the novels. I wrote a little piece detailing some of these variations for the Wikipedia article on The Onedin Line if anyone is interested in having a look.Best Wishes

But, also like the early "Who" stories, this may turn up in the hands of a collector one day, or in someone's closet because he recorded it, and we may see it restored and released. We can but hope.
(Of course, being in the Colonies here, getting ANY of "The Onedin Line" episodes is an exercise in frustration. Even repeated, polite, almost begging requests to BBC America have yielded nothing.)

These are the latest of the Memphis Bell released, are in the original episode format and are of similar quality to the previous five series that have been released from the same source.
By default they have subtitles in the Dutch language, these can be turned off, the soundtrack is the original English one.
These would again appear to been made from broadcast tapes, possibly second generation copies intended for overseas TV companies, in this case probably the ones the BBC sent to the Netherlands.
Having said that there is nothing really wrong with them, and short of re-mastering from original BBC tapes – unlikely because it would be expensive – they are the best we are likely to get.
The discs are Region 2 PAL, so those of you in other regions will need to make sure you can play them on your equipment. This is a special problem for north American viewers I'm told. Most North American DVD players do not understand PAL system and region 2 or 0 (so called universal region). They understand only NTSC system and region 1.
A solution is to buy a suitable player. Google for multi-region code free pal/NTSC DVD players, I easily found one seller, (there are many to choose from), example:

So overall I'm pleased with the series 6 DVDs now if they'll just do the two remaining series…
