I just realised I did not say why,

 

William did have to struggle with his history, not
an easy thing in those days to cope with – true.

 

But he proved to be so gullible when Josiah
Beaumont, played by Warren Clarke of Diezel and Pasco (spelling) fame,
entered the story.

 

He was a total coward when it came to his
relationship with Charlotte (James' daughter) although before his
sticky end it would seem he did have some feelings for her.

 

I did think Marc Harrison was very good in the
part, I am sure he was not at all like the character!
