Hi Pete,
Sorry for not getting back to you sooner, but your message has just arrived.
I will have to back to the Bol site to refresh my memory, unless you have
managed to get a copy of the DVD in the meantime. I must say that I was very
impressed with the service from Bol. The postage was bit expensive, but the
DVD set arrived in 3 days from posting, and it was posted out a week before
the official release date. The Memphis Belle DVD releases seem to have a
better picture quality than the Playback release.Eira.

Did you also watch the Defining Shows yesterday evening on BBC4?
For those who didn't I like to tell that there was a nice part, about 10
minutes, all about The Onedin Line.In those economical bad days in the UK, or better say whole Europe, Onedin
was something people were looked forward to each week.The value was discussed and how the episodes were made, Anne and Peter
talked about it as well as Peter Graham Scott. It was good to see how well
Anne and Peter are these days, in fact they look the same only more than 30
years older.For those who didn't watch it…yesterday was a repeat from earlier this
month so it might be broadcasted again. I'll keep an eye on the programming

1. How is the quality i.e. graininess,
colour/contrast/brightness. If anyone else has a copy of this or
Season 2/3 then a short sample clip (30 seconds or so) might be good
(or if you yourself know how the extract a clip form a DVD ?)
2. Are the subtitles (in Dutch I presume) mandatory or can they
be switched off. I have seen Dutch imports where the subtitles
are 'burned' into the video image.I am asking these questions as I have given up on a UK company
releasing this terrific series. Goodness knows, the US are even
releasing Dalla, Dynasty and The Waltons which pales into
insignificance compared to this great series.Cheers,

The quality is good, the way you may expect from a 70s film.
Subtitles can be switched off, the same is for the Dutch releases series 1,
2 and 3.Think the Dutch imports you've seen are (illegal) copies..copied from TV
with the subtitles on and no originals.Hope you have enough info for the moment, can't make a sample clip…maybe I

I hope you're pleased the Season 4, could you just answer me the
following.
1. How is the quality i.e. graininess,
colour/contrast/brightness. If anyone else has a copy of this or
Season 2/3 then a short sample clip (30 seconds or so) might be good
(or if you yourself know how the extract a clip form a DVD ?)
2. Are the subtitles (in Dutch I presume) mandatory or can they
be switched off. I have seen Dutch imports where the subtitles
are 'burned' into the video image.I am asking these questions as I have given up on a UK company
releasing this terrific series. Goodness knows, the US are even
releasing Dalla, Dynasty and The Waltons which pales into
insignificance compared to this great series.Cheers,

Well even the first series from Playback is a bit grainy, the BBC
must regret not putting more effort into the film stock they used.
Still, with all the new techniques that some companies in the US are
adopting for remastering old footage (Criterion – The 39 Steps, The
Third Man; Warner Brothers – Gone with the Wind etc.)
I've had a look on e-bay and it seems that 19.99 STG is the going
rate for Series 2-4. I had a look on MemphisBelle but cannot see a
way of ordering from them ? 2/3rd of the price at 19.95 Euros.Cheers,

In answer to your queries :-1) I have so far only viewed Disc 1 of the 4 discs and this was of
excellent quality–unfortunately, I don't know how to extract a clip from a
DVD.2) The Dutch subtitles on my copy can be switched off.
