4th November 2011 at 7:15 am #1368galacticprobeParticipantGreetings, All,
I was wondering if anyone has experience with purchasing items from the iOffer site. The reason I'm asking is that I found these while searching for TOL DVDs:
http://www.ioffer.com/i/the-onedin-line-all-8-seasons-204580528 (seller is "natilus")
There is another seller there but that one is asking a lot more for the series. Here's the page if anyone cares to take a look:
http://www.ioffer.com/search/items/The%20Onedin%20Line
The first seller on the list is priced way out of my wallet's range at the moment. The second one listed (natilus) is the one in question. I've read the description for the "DivX" discs and that one put me right off. A little lower on the list is a seller "urbanlaw" who has individual seasons, but when you add up the total price for all eight it comes to more than the expensive seller at the top.
So does anyone have any experience dealing with any of these sellers on iOffer? Or iOffer itself? It isn't so much the region I'm concerned with, it's the PAL vs. NTSC format. My TV doesn't have the auto detect capability to play both; it's strictly NTSC, and "natilus" supposedly has discs that will play in all formats.
It's been over 30 years since I've seen an episode, and when the channel in my area stopped airing them the last one they showed (in the spring of 1980) was "Ice and Fire", so I was way behind in the storyline. I would love to get the entire series, but I don't want to just jump into anything because of my eagerness.
Any and all advice is appreciated.
Dino.
4th November 2011 at 1:14 pm #1369samwebster2000MemberI don't know about the iOffer site, I have not had dealings there. What I can say that obviously they are copies, therefore not official releases and could be technically termed as 'illegal'.
If the technicalities do not worry you, and you have a braodband connection then a better possible approach may be to join one of the private sites which share old TV programmes.
One such fairly recent new site is http://rareshare.me , I believe that sign-up is at the moment open, so there should be no trouble in joining.
There are already several onedin line series available there, and it is expected that all will be before very long.
It is not necessary to part with any money at all if you follow the rules of the site.
The quality of the video is, really little different form the DVD they were sourced from.
There is a sample here:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/4965107/Onedin%20sample.aviAlternatively if you want to you can buy all the episodes on official DVD releases, from places like eBay and Amazon.
Hope this helps.

>4th November 2011 at 3:06 pm #1371liamegan2000MemberI think Dino was concerned with the fact that the official DVD releases are
not suitable for his NTSC TV.I know this has been a problem with people I traded official DVDs with years
ago. We in the UK can play either system on most equipment, and any region
with the corect hack applied tothe player, but the reverse is not true on
most TVs and players in North America. As far as I know XviD avi files are not affected and will play via a
suitable stand alone disc player, or a media extender to a TV display of
either type, NTSC or PAL.It is also possible to convert PAL DVD to NTSC by 'ripping' them to files on
a PC then using and then re-authoring with an app such as TMPGEnc DVD Author
3 (expensive to buy) or FAVC.exe (free) and burn to DVD-r discs. But this
takes time and some know-how.The big advantage with trying the share sites .avi is that it will cost
nothing to try them.Bill.

>4th November 2011 at 4:16 pm #1372galacticprobeParticipantThanks for the info. I'll have to check out the rareshares site. For some reason the dropbox sample you gave me the link to keeps crashing my browsers.I might just keep checking ebay and Amazon, though, like you suggest. I'm not much of a fan of, as you say "illegal" copies. You can't rely on the quality of the copies (or the person selling them), but mainly it does not show up on the copyright holder's feedback (in this case, probably the BBC) as a sale of their product, which in turn makes it looks like there isn't much of a demand for the series, and therefore the BBC is less likely to release more of them.
Thank you!

>4th November 2011 at 5:07 pm #1376liamegan2000MemberYes all 8 series are commercially available on DVD from the Netherlands. And
can be obtained from various sites selling them. They turn up on Amazon and
eBay pretty well all the time. These are as noted all PAL region 2 discs.I obtained the full set over a period of a few years, they probably cost me
in the region of £80 in total. They could probably be got for less than that
now as pre-owned etc. They have the jackets in the Dutch language, and the DVD have Dutch
subtitles, these can be turned off when you play them so no problem, and the
soundtrack is in the original English. You should also note that series 1 and 2 are often in non-episode form,
these lack two episodes, in series 1, Cry of The Blackbird, series 2 Bloody
Week. This did not worry me since I have good quality copies of the two
episodes. But the full episode versions are now available for these two series, you
just have to be careful if you want them in episode form when buying. All the rest are the complete episode versions.
Bill.

>5th November 2011 at 5:11 am #1377galacticprobeParticipantYeah, unfortunately. The only TVs I'd found that had the capability of playing NTSC and PAL formats had costs that were equal to a semester's worth of tuition (in-state), or room and board for my daughter's college. (And while my GI Bill is paying for her college tuition, guess which of the other two – TV vs. Room and Board – won out?)I've actually e-mailed both the BBC and 2|entertain (and one other I can't remember who have produced official TOL DVDs) asking them about releasing more TOL DVDs for Region 1 because there were many fans in the US that would like to buy them, and I got what was basically canned replies from each one – that whole "We strive to provide the best service to our customers and your comments are very important to us…" From there they went on to explain how they relate to customers and review their feedback – pretty much degenerating into another few paragraphs of "Blah, blah, blah. We thank you for your input."
What I can't understand is why the BBC is ignoring this side of the pond when it comes to TOL when just about every other program they've produced is available for Region 1. IMHO, if you can get an obscure series like "Space Precinct" in Region 1, then you should be able to get TOL in Region 1 as well. (And for the record, I do like the Gerry Anderson series, all of them so far.)
Dino.
