A few people have asked me about region free DVD players, and I know the
subject has come up on here a few times, so for those of us in the UK and
Europe (with the possible exception of France and its odd TV system) :

    Toshiba SD-270E,
    I bought mine from Novatech
    http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?tos-sd270e&P=0 and it is
presently on offer from them at £34.99. A search in Google will no doubt
find other sellers in your area (or if you are outside the UK).

You have to re-set or "hack" the region setting. Very easy, the region hack
    instructions are here:
    http://www.videohelp.com/dvdhacks/toshiba-sd270e/8208

I've been using it for about 4 months now. It plays all makes of burned
discs I have, which includes Sony TDK Ritek Datawrite Verbatim BulkPak
Maxell etc as well as Tesco's own brand, and obviously commercial DVDs,
including some a friend bought in New York that were region 1, plus all my
DivX and XvidD discs as well.

If you are looking for a cheapish player, it is a good machine –
    recommended.

    Bill,

From your email you seem to have tried out several brands of DVD
blank discs. I have a Sony DVD recorder, a desktop PC fitted with a
Sony DVD writer and a Lite-On writer, and an old IBM notebook with an
IBM-branded DVD writer made by Panasonic. I've had my fingers burned
with a couple of brands of blank discs which haven't worked in some
or all of these. I now use Imation or Verbatim (including double-
layer if needed) and these work OK in everything I've got.

I see you mention Tesco discs, and a friend uses these in his DVD
recorder and for his computer with no problems. Have you found any
    problems with these?

    Regards,

    Garth

I've used Tesco DVD -R, CD-R and some DVD +R. This must run into hundreds
of discs by now as I archive my VHS tapes to disc.

I don't honestly remember a failure with one of the discs except where I'd
    screwed something up.

I'm using a NEC 4550A burner which is a couple of years old in the PC.
