Thanks for inviting me to join the Group.
I LOVE Onedin Line and am a great fan of Anne Stallybrass & Peter
Gilmore.Thought you might like to know that a friend and I visited Dartmouth
last weekend. We had a wonderful time, it's a lovely town. We saw
several places used in the series, notably Bayards Cove, but also St
Saviour's church where Anne & James married (and I think Emma &
Daniel), the market square (where I think Robert met the companion in
High Price); and went over to Kingswear on the opposite side of the
river where the US quay scenes in Blockade were filmed. We also went
in the Dartmouth Arms, beside Bayards Cove, which has several frames
of photos from various productions that have been filmed in the area,
including one of Onedin Line. This contains about 8 photos of the
cast/series.Not sure if you are aware that Anne & Peter have a small house in
Dartmouth – we didn't see them unfortunately.A nice Onedin Line story is related on the River Dart cruises:
About two miles upstream from Dartmouth, there's a wood on right
hand bank which was used as the Amazon jungle in an episode (one from
the third series????). The BBC "planted" some plastic palm
trees and put some plastic alligators on the bank to make it more
realistic plus recruited about 150 locals as extras. The Charlotte
Rhodes sailed up the "Amazon" and Captain Baines then
transferred to
a small boat to rescue James/the crew ….. everything was going
well. However, as they were filming, the steam train (which runs
through the wood) went by, with its whistle going and black smoke
pouring from it. The director's words were unrepeatable and the
scene had to be refilmed.We also spent a few minutes at Exeter Quay which was used for a
number of scenes in the first series – the main UK publicity photo of
Anne & James was taken here. We took LOTS of photos.Bye for now,

just from memory and without thinking too much about it, we have Jane
Semour, John Thaw, Michael Billington, Windsor Davies, there are others.
Quite a few careers were "launched" (nice tie to shipping). There were also
of course actors of long standing, such as the excellent James Hayter
(Captain Webster).Probably the biggest star of this outstanding series at the time was Jessica
Benton (Elizabeth).Most accounts of the series one reads now seem to barely mention her. I
believe this is mainly because she decided to withdraw from the acting
profession and the public eye.The last I heard of her was that she married a photographer called Charles
Waite and now lives in Dorset. She remained good friends with other cast
members particularly Howard Lang until his death (Baines) and Peter Gilmor
(James).Jessica was a "household name" over the years the series ran in the UK a big
star at the time, her fans who I am one, missed those outstanding
performances and wonder what might have been if she had continued her

and seems to be quite approachable, perhaps the list owner might like to
invite him to join our group?I have every copy of the show on tape (I think 91). Some I recorded when
originally aired, some when repeated on the BBC Circa1984 and the rest from
UK Gold some years ago. (Unfortunately the image quality of a lot of these
while "watchable" is not very good and of course the tapes are getting quite
old now, so I am hoping for repeats on a digital service sometime.I would like yourself welcome the whole series on DVD but I suspect there
might be some rights problems . Also just how good is the present offering
on DVD?If I can help with any information let me know,

Meanwhile a little question of my own. Can anyone who has DVD of the series
tell me the episodes list on the DVD version, and if they are edited
together or are in separate episodes. I have looked around sites like Amazon
etc and I can't quite figure out what you actually get.It would seem there is a 2 DVD available, I can play DVDs from any region so
what I am looking for is (preferably the episodes version) at the best price
with the most material on them.TIA Bill.
