SHORT STORIES

When filming finished in Falmouth I spoke to the powers that be at the last night party, admittedly we were all in our cups at the time, and said I had a brilliant idea! How about bringing the Onedin Line bang up to date with tankers and container ships and ferries and the like with a new 'Young Mr.Onedin' fresh from university with his shiny new degree keen to take over and run the business his way, only his way was the 'Green' way, back to sail and windjammers and salty seadogs!!!
Naturally I had someone in mind for the lead role………..I remember we all got very drunk that night.

The bang up to date idea could be linked to the original series by having a new member of the family tracing their ancestry … bit by bit we could learn what happened to the old Onedins in the years since 1886…dark secrets that affect the present etc.

The role Marc Harrison played in Poldark was that of Ned Tamblyn, and I think it would have been before his run as William Frazer.

I've known all these years that I should keep quiet about my 'Son of Onedin' idea!! (or got it copyrighted!!).
You can see the scene, young handsome Onedin, stuck in boring office overlooking container port, tallship race gathering in the harbour entrance, sets him off daydreaming about Gt.Grandfather James, of crisp white sails, of masts heeled to a stiff breeze, dolphins joyfully playing at the bows, of real seamanship and romance………… Cue music…………….

OK then everyone, how about this:

Young handsome Jason Onedin (John Simm, for visualisation purposes), stuck in boring office overlooking container port, tallship race gathering in the harbour entrance, sets him off daydreaming about Gt.Grandfather James, of crisp white sails, of masts heeled to a stiff breeze, dolphins joyfully playing at the bows, of real seamanship and romance…

Jessica Frazer (Joanne Farrell, I thought, if anyone knows who I mean), current head of the Frazer Line, is descended from Robert Frazer, who took his father William's surname on learning his true parentage and was bequeathed the company by his grandmother Lady Fogarty. Jessica is attracted to Jason but also his business rival. She is far more ruthless than he suspects. She is tempted to take advantage of his tendency to daydream about sailing ships and keep only half an eye on business…

Business aside, they are both fascinated by their family history and have been researching. Intriguing mysteries have come to light.

In 1887, Caroline Onedin was found dead at the foot of the staircase in her home. Foul play was suspected, especially as her husband Samuel had been seen on a number of occasions wining and dining his ex-wife Charlotte. Had either Samuel or Charlotte, or both, removed the increasingly surplus Caroline? If not, then who?

Jessica searches through a box of correspondence in the attic of the Frazer house. It belonged to Elizabeth Fogarty. Two items arrest her attention.

A remark in a letter from Charlotte to Elizabeth refers to the possibility of Mr Dunwoody having murdered his first wife in order to marry his pretty second one.

Another letter is from William Frazer to his mother, written from a villa abroad – and it's dated three years after William's supposedly fatal accident in Liverpool.

Could any of these mysteries be connected?

And so on.
