bastet1958MemberDear shipmates,
Peter Gilmore has passed away.
The Captain has set sail for his very last journey.I was immensely sad when I heard this news.
Peter has died in a hospice. I do hope he did not have to suffer too much in the end.My condolences to Anne and his son Jason, his nearest and dearest.
"He was a gentle man and a gentleman"; how well Jessica put it.Peter, you have brought so much happiness into our lives:
by your fine acting, your smile, your humour. You will always be loved and remembered.

to visit the locations where the Onedin Line has been filmed. Now we
all know it was at Dartmouth and Exeter for the most part, but also
Falmouth and Charlestown are mentioned. Does anybody know which scenes
(in which episodes) have been filmed there, anything you can recognize
at once?Erika

>Hello Istvan,
I'm afraid I have to contradict your theory. In fact, it was the other
way round: The shipping line was named after the TV-series!When the shipping line was founded, back in the seventies, "The Onedin
Line" was very popular in Sweden. In Swedish the series is called
"Onedinlinjen". Maybe the owner of the shipping company hoped some of
the series' success would also fall upon his business when he called
it "Anedinlinjen" (the pronunciation is really the same). But it
remained a small company, owning only one ship which is mostly used as
a ferry between Stockholm and Mariehamn. To my knowledge there is no Swedish name like "onedin" or "anedin",
but possibly our Swedish members can tell us more about that. I think
that the name "onedin" actually is a creation of Cyril Abraham.By the way, can you tell us how "The Onedin Line" is called in Hungarian?

I think the music show Mathias is referring to might be "MOT" (Music
on Top). It was produced in Hamburg by the German channel NDR and
broadcast on German television on Dec. 27th, 1976. Peter performed 2
songs, "We" and "Home lovin' man". As Mathias said, at that time
people thought Peter was just another actor trying to be a singer as
well; they didn't know a had been a singer first.
I don't know anything about Peter appearing in German television in
advertising spots. In the sixties advertising on TV was rather
limited, and I think Peter is a face you remember.
There is another point I am interested in. As we all know, Peter was
born in Leipzig, Germany. So is he of German descent or did his
parents just happen to be in Germany when he was born? In those days
it was not as common to work abroad as it is today. On the other
hand "Gilmore" is not a German name, but perhaps he chose that name
later on. Maybe someone of our group knows about it?

my favourite character has always been James Onedin. As Maija already
has pointed out, the whole series would be unthinkable without Peter
Gilmore. You could find a substitute for Robert for some time, but
this would never do with James Onedin. My favourite female character is of course Anne. She is such a tough
woman with a strong will matching her husband`s. And as Cyril Abraham
stresses in his Onedin books, she is truely "a most remarkable woman"!Erika

Bill,
I gave a try to the web archive you mentioned and I actually found it:
the URL is http://onedinline.users.btopenworld.com
Hope that helps!

bastet1958MemberHello everybody,
I joined this group recently and I would like to introduce myself.
My name is Erika and I live in the south of Germany. I have been an
Onedin Line fan for over 30 years now. It has fascinated me from the
beginning, when I was a girl of 14, but even now, as a woman in her
midforties, the series has the same thrill for me. I think it's the
blend of fact and fiction, of adventure and romance, of good script
and excellent acting which makes the series so outstanding and unique.
The first episode of the Onedin Line ever shown in Germany was
broadcast by Bavarian television on Oct. 25th, 1972.I still remember
it well; we only had a black-and-white screen then. In Germany, the
Onedin Line ran on the regional channels, not the federal ones. This
meant that there was only little information about it in the
magazines. I collected every litle scrap I could find, but all in all
it was not much. So I was delighted when finally, nearly 30 years
after its start, I found information on my favourite series in the
internet! In fact, I've learned more about the Onedin Line in the
past 3 years than in the 25 years before!
In 2001, I discovered the "inofficial website of the Onedin Line". I
thought it was excellent and contacted its creator, a young Cambridge
student. We exchanged several e-mails, and the young lady was very
kind and knowledgeable. Then suddenly, in Oct. 2002, the site
vanished from the web. I tried to contact her by e-mail and even by
letter, but got no replies. Does anyone know what has happened to the
website or to the girl who created it?
I haven't seen the whole of the Onedin Line. The last thing I
remember was that both Letty and Charlotte were pregnant. So if
somebody could give me a rough outline how the story continued to its
very end, I would be most grateful.
Now I am looking forward to Dec 21st, when the German channel NDR 3
will start series 1 of the Onedin Line. They have planned to show
only the first 6 episodes. I hope this is a test, just to see if the
series still appeals to the public, and more will follow in the
future.
So much for today,
hoping to hear from many members of this group,
Erika -
